VP of Sales - Global HR, Payroll & Financial Services 

Location: Nairobi, Kenya


Are you a strategic sales executive with deep experience in (Software-as-a-service) SaaS and fintech, excited by the prospect of accelerating pan-African growth for an HR fintech? Workpay is recruiting a VP of Sales - Global HR, Payroll & Financial Services to join our Executive Team as a strategic collaborator and team leader.


Workpay is an HR/fintech enabling organisations in Africa to manage and pay employees quickly and compliantly, empowering them to streamline operations and enhance productivity. Whether remote employees in Mali or a local team in Mozambique, Workpay's SaaS platform and embedded services ensure that payroll, benefits, and financial services arrive on time. With employees at the core of our work, our team cares deeply about people and their growth. 


Background

Founded in 2019, Workpay has grown to over 120 employees in five African countries. Over 1000 organizations use our SaaS platform and EOR services to manage and pay their teams. Workpay also empowers these users to attract and retain talent through embedded employee financial services such as Earned Wage Access (EWA), insurance, and credit. We are further accelerating growth through a newly formed Partnerships Team. In 2025, we aim to 3x our ARR.


Role Overview

The VP of Sales - Global HR, Payroll & Financial Services is responsible for driving Workpay's growth through the identification and acquisition of new business opportunities, partnerships, and markets. This role involves strategic planning, market analysis, partnership development, and day-to-day leadership of multiple sales and partnership managers in different countries. The role will report to the Chief Business Officer to develop and implement growth strategies and will be accountable for ambitious and aggressive ARR growth targets and other KPIs.


Key Responsibilities

Growth and Revenue Generation Strategy:

  • Develop and implement comprehensive business development strategies to achieve ARR and other growth targets
  • Identify and evaluate potential markets, business opportunities, and partnerships
  • Lead market research and analysis to inform strategic decisions and identify emerging trends in the African HRtech sector


Team Leadership

  • Build and mentor high-performing business development teams, supervising, at first, the following Team Leads:
  1. Sales Managers in KE, TZ, SA, and NG
  2. Demand Gen Manager in KE
  3. Partnerships Managers in KE & NG
  4. Financial Services (FS) Sales Manager in KE
  • Set, monitor, analyze and report on sales metrics for all above teams.
  • Foster a collaborative and innovative team culture that encourages growth.


Business and Partnerships Development:

  • Establish and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders, including clients, partners, and industry influencers
  • Negotiate and close high-value deals and partnerships that drive revenue growth
  • Represent Workpay at industry events, conferences, and meetings to enhance visibility and build networks


Financial Management:

  • Develop and manage budgets, ensuring optimal allocation of resources
  • Monitor and report financial performance of business development initiatives
  • Conduct financial analysis and feasibility studies to support investment decisions


Cross-functional Collaboration:

  • Work closely with other teams, including Product, Marketing, Customer Success, Employer of Record (EoR) Sales, and Payroll-as-a-Service (PaaS) Sales, to ensure alignment of business development strategies
  • Provide insights and feedback to inform product development and marketing.
  • Collaborate with the Executive Team to shape Workpay’s strategic direction


Required Qualifications

  • A bachelor’s degree in business, marketing, or a related field
  • 7+ years in business development or sales, with 3+ years in a senior leadership role
  • Experience taking new fintech products to market and driving their growth
  • Proven track record developing and successfully executing startup growth strategies, leading business development initiatives, and closing high-value deals
  • Strong strategic thinking and analytical skills
  • Excellent negotiation, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated ability to build and lead high-performing teams and partnerships
  • In-depth knowledge of African HRtech and Fintech trends and market dynamics
  • Ability to travel as required


Preferred Qualifications

  • MBA or equivalent advanced degree.
  • Experience in the HRtech industry or technology startups.
  • Proficiency in CRM software and business analytics tools.
  • An established network of industry contacts and relationships.
